Imagine
a quarter page ad. White background, black type in the middle reading
"Jandek on Corwood." A fitting ad for an enigma. That
was the most traditional advertising vision of Jandek.
Who is Jandek?
And what is Corwood Industries?
One of the most
mysterious artists of the 20th century and lone artist on Houston
based Corwood Industries. 35 records produced, only 2 interviews
ever given (one in the debut issue of Spin and one in Texas Monthly),
and never a live performance until a recent unannounced appearance
at Glasgow's Instal Festival, a huge amount of speculation has formed
about exactly what these mysterious records are all about and who
they were coming from.
Sparse filmmaking
perfectly complimenting the mystique of Jandek. Interviews of Jandek
fans and historians including Byron Coley, Richie Unterberger, Dr.
Demento and Calvin Johnson interspersed with static images, album
covers and various imagery that pays a fitting tribute. The most
complete collection of information available about Jandek, but as
a letter from Corwood Industries to producers of the documentary
stated, "You may not get all the answers you want. It's better
that way."
Whether you
are a cult fan of Jandek, interested in the history of experimental
music or have never even heard of Jandek, this intriguing documentary
and tribute to one of the most obscure artists of our time is more
worthwhile than any other DVD you will watch this year. |
